"Chapter 4

Chris paused at the special guest quarters’ door, rearranged his clothes, swallowed and knocked. 'Mr. McClaussen, Chris Longley here. You sent for me, sir?'

The door opened, McClaussen stood to the side and motioned Chris to enter. 'Come in. We have something we need to discuss.'

Chris entered a spacious and well-appointed suite, typically reserved for government officials who sometimes came out to personally experience what happens on an oilrig in the Gulf.

'Have a seat,' McClaussen ordered, pointing to the sofa and taking a seat in front of a mahogany table upon which sat an open laptop, its lit screen hidden from Chris.

'How can I be of assistance, sir?' Chris asked, sitting as instructed…

'Well, Chris, first I want to apologize for the abrupt reassignment of duties. It's nothing personal, you understand, but I had to remove you from the equation long enough to determine your involvement, if any, in a high-level information leak concerning our determined oil reserves. Being our company man, you were the prime suspect. And now the man we believe was responsible for the leak was found murdered last night…'

"Chapter 6

"When Mr. Marx enters, I need you all to look harmless. Assure him with your smiles that he’s not in trouble. When I noticed him standing near the pipe rack a few minutes ago, he looked…concerned. Of course, some concern would be expected. And how much of it is over the email, yesterday’s drilling incident, my talk with him, or the progress of today’s survey, we can’t know. Not yet. Having witnessed you all flying in just now will add substantially to his concern. need him relaxed. Off-guard. Got it?"

John Marx knocked three quick times, then opened the door and entered the room. He looked warily at the four black jump-suited men, each moving backwards, silently and inobtrusively dissolving into the four corners of the room.

Maximum field and firepower positions, a voice in his head that had saved his life more than once before in Vietnam warned. Then he noticed the grey-suited executive standing at McClaussen’s side.

These men mean business, the voice in his head continued.

All eyes turned towards John as he stopped before the conference table as far from his adversaries as he could. It was clear everyone was waiting for an axe to fall. But from whom and where would it fall?"
